'Got Me All Wrong' is the third single from KillerStar's debut album. Following positive reception to my nostalgic video for their first release 'Should've Known Better', I again turned to the past for inspiration here, combining my footage with Dada films over a century old. VENTS Magazine described the video as "one of the most creative we've seen in a long time, a completely unforgettable directing job from JJ Eringa!"
Blasted by that screeching opening guitar, Got Me All Wrong hooked me immediately and while my first thought was for a video built around the revving of race cars and screeching of tires, what I loved most about the song was its brilliant contrast of angular guitars with swirling sequences that are really quite hypnotic. I wanted to show this visually by juxtaposing squares and circles, the hard-edged and the soft, and luckily for me I didn’t have to look further than 100 years in the past for the perfect inspiration!!
This video uses sequences from Dada films by Hans Richter, Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray, which I love because this video is an opportunity to do a variation on what they were doing back then, recontextualising materials for a new purpose and (hopefully) giving them new life! You may think you knew what they were about but…you got them all wrong!
This is all built around a brilliant central performance from Sophie Allen, who captured the exact balance of playfulness and undeniable cool that I was looking for, and which I think is present in the song too.
